Introducing the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation

PPC's Mission Statement

Building on the Reformed tradition, the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation seeks to glorify God by contributing to the spiritual and intellectual vitality of Christ's church. To that end, PPC publishes resources that advance religious scholarship, stimulate conversation about moral values, and inspire faithful living.

The Presbyterian Publishing Corporation (PPC) is the denominational publisher for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but the materials it issues under its Westminster John Knox Press imprint cover the spectrum of modern religious thought and represent the work of scholarly and popular authors of many different religious affiliations. PPC's Geneva Press imprint is for a specifically Presbyterian audience.

PPC publishes more than 80 new books and other resources each year and manages a backlist of more than 1,000 titles. In addition, PPC prints and mails almost 135,000 regular and 16,000 large-print editions of its daily devotional These Days four times a year.

For 160 years, PPC and its predecessors have served clergy, scholars, students, and lay people. Most of its publications are used in the spiritual formation of clergy and laity, the training of seminarians, the dissemination of religious scholars' work, and the preparation for ministry of lay church leaders. One of PPC's principal aims is to help readers of its publications achieve biblical and theological literacy.

PPC is a non-profit corporation that receives no mission dollars from the PC(USA) but sustains itself entirely through sales of its publications. It has long been known for sound business practices and excellent customer service. PPC has generated positive operating revenue in all but one year of its corporate existence. The corporation invests surplus funds in research and development, new products, and a generous Benevolence Plan that supports ministers, congregations, seminaries, and other institutions around the world.

PPC promotes its products at special events, through direct mail and catalogue programs, through sales calls on book buyers, and on this Web site.

Governance

As an entity of the General Assembly, PPC is governed by a Board of Directors, who are elected in accordance with the requirements of the General Assembly Nominating Committee (GANC), taking into consideration a balance of ordained and lay, gender, racial ethnicity, geography, and age classification. In addition, the unique distinction of PPC's financially self-sustaining nature requires a diverse Board of Directors with specialized business expertise.

Benevolence Programs

PPC supports the work of ministry within the PC(USA) through various benevolence programs created for the express purpose of assisting those in need. Included in PPC's benevolence program are the following:

Equipping the Saints - PPC provides free resources to newly ordained ministers to assist them as they get started in their ministry to the church. In 2004, more than 400 new ministers received assistance.

In the Beginning - A package of congregational resources is provided to every new PC(USA) church as its congregation gets started in the initial steps of building a community of faith. These resources include The Book of Order, The Book of Confessions: Study Edition, The Book of Common Worship, and Presbyterian Polity for Church Officers.

Disaster Assistance - Churches that have experienced a catastrophic loss and are trying to recover from its consequences receive a replacement package of resources, including copies of The Presbyterian Hymnal and The Book of Common Worship.

Books without Borders - PPC, in cooperation with the Worldwide Ministries Division (WMD) of the PC(USA), provides current publications to international seminaries in the second and third worlds.

Overseas Publishing Ministry - PPC, in consultation with WMD, is donating state-of-the art desktop publishing equipment and providing training and technical support in all facets of the publishing process to an ecumenical publishing ministry in Latin America: Centro Evangelico de Estudieos Pastorales en America Central (Protestant Center for Pastoral Studies in Central America). In addition, PPC is aiding Editrice Claudiana, the preeminent Protestant publisher in Italy.

Robert W. Bohl Racial - Ethnic Internship Program-PPC provides an 8-10 week internship in its offices to a racial-ethnic student from a PC(USA) seminary interested in considering religious publishing as a ministry option.

Readers' Service - PPC, again in cooperation with WMD, is providing assistance on the development of a Web site to index books available to mission personnel in the U.S. and abroad.

New Revised Standard Version Bible Translation & Utilization - PPC provides publishing expertise through a designated representative to this important committee of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.

Presbyterian Writers Guild-PPC helps fund the Presbyterian Writers Guild Web site.
