 Grace Abounds

 Scripture: Luke 24:13–35

Seeing Clearly

Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.

Luke 24:31a

“I can’t believe that trees have individual leaves!” That was my reaction when I put on my first pair of eyeglasses as a child. Because my vision was so poor, I could not see the fine details of something as obvious as tree leaves even though they were right in front of me. This must have been how the disciples felt when Jesus broke bread with them in this postresurrection visit. They didn’t recognize him at first. They needed the gift of the blessed meal to see clearly.

Too often we miss holy visitations in our lives. Encumbered by the stress and strain of daily living, we often overlook or can no longer recognize grace breaking into our mundane existence. As we continue our life journey today, are we anticipating a vision from God or are our eyes fixed solely on the ground?

Action Step: Take a walk today, and notice the many ways God appears in nature and in the people you see.

Open my eyes that I might see, Spirit divine. Amen.
